U.S., Japan move toward ending beef import ban
Japan
appears ready to drop its policy of requiring testing of all cattle, domestic
and imported, for BSE. That policy has been a bone of contention between
Washington and Tokyo, as American trade officials insist that testing of cows
under 24 months of age is useless due to the long incubation period of bovine
spongiform encephalopathy.
A panel reporting to
Japan's Food Safety Commission has ceded the point in a draft of a report
expected to be approved after revisions. According to Tokyo's
Daily Yomiuri, Japan will withdraw
its demand that all cows exported from the U.S. be subject to BSE testing. The
report uses the age of 20 months as the cutoff, after which testing will still
be required, compared to 30 months in the EU and the U.S.
Assuming the report
is adopted without major changes, Japan and the U.S. could reopen trade
negotiations in the near future to end the ban on imports of American beef.
Japan settled on the
20-month cutoff because the youngest cow ever confirmed to have BSE was 21
months old. The U.S. is expected to dispute that cutoff, while Japan is expected
to demand that all dangerous portions of the cow, including its brain and spinal
cord, be completely and cleanly removed before the meat is shipped, as is the
practice in Japan and Europe.
The
Daily Yomiuri, in an editorial,
also warned that the U.S. must account more precisely for the age of cows at
slaughter.

Missouri Restaurants Awarded for Outstanding Beef
Diversity with beef entrees, customer satisfaction and exceptional service has earned Missouri restaurants the prestigious “Beef Backer” award, sponsored by the Missouri Beef Industry Council. The five winners are Pirate’s Cove in Hannibal, Jackstack Barbecue in Kansas City, Tony Marino’s in Ballwin, Citizen Kane’s in Kirkwood and the Black Kettle Restaurant in Monett.
Patrons, culinary organizations, fellow chefs and local beef producers nominated Missouri restaurants in June. Over the last few months, a panel of judges active with Hotel and Restaurant Management departments of several state colleges evaluated each restaurant for their leadership in beef recipes, diversity in beef menuing and overall customer satisfaction to determine the 2004 Beef Backers.
The Beef Backer competition is funded through the $1 per head beef checkoff program to increase beef demand. It is a program that has been proven to sell more beef though increased awareness and added beef menu items. Each winning restaurant receives a prize package valued at over $1000. This money can be used to advertise their Beef Backer Status, add the Beef Backer logo to their menu and add new beef menu items to their repertoire. In addition, MBIC funds in part a media and community reception to highlight the restaurant’s accomplishments. If you are interested in learning more about the Beef Backer program, contact Dawn at the Missouri Beef Industry Council at 800-441-6242 or dawn@mobeef.com

Make Plans to Attend Cattlemen’s Charity Weekend, September 17-19 in Steelville
It’s not too late to get in on all the fun and festivities of the Missouri's Cattlemen Foundation Cattlemen’s Charity Weekend. This year will mark the 10th year of raising funds to improve the quality of life for children with physical disabilities. The Huzzah Valley Resort and the Crawford County Cattlemen’s Association will host this special event, September 17-19, in Steelville. It will be a weekend full of activities including a horse trail ride, ATV ride, games, water activities, and a dance, as well as plenty of great food, fun and fellowship.
All of the funds raised benefit the Missouri’s Cattleman Foundation Disabled Children’s Fund. This fund provides up to $1,500 matching dollars for the purchase of adaptive or assistive equipment, or to make modifications to a building or vehicle. These dollars have helped to secure items such as wheelchairs, wheelchair tie-downs, van lifters, elevators and ramps. To date the fund has granted over $90,000 to over 100 young people in 40 counties across the state of Missouri.
This will be a wonderful weekend and you won’t want to miss a minute. Last year, over 125 riders showed their support of Missouri kids as they enjoyed the food, fun, scenery, atmosphere and great hospitality. Space is still available for the ride and in the campground, but don’t delay. For more information about the ride contact Darla Eggers at 573-449-4923 or Darla@mocattle.com For lodging/camping, contact Huzzah Valley Resort at 800-367-4516 or vacation@huzzahvalley.com
