Election Results Will Impact Missouri Agriculture

Most Missourians are aware of the re-election of President George W. Bush and of the election of Matt Blunt as Governor of the state of Missouri.  However, many elections beyond the state of Missouri have the potential to impact agriculture in our state:

In South Dakota, Senator Tom Daschle became the first Senate minority leader in history to lose a re-election bid. Republican challenger Jim Thune defeated Daschle by about 9,000 votes. Two years ago, Thune challenged Senator Tim Johnson and lost by 528 votes.

In Texas, long-time Congressman Charles Stenholm was defeated by freshman Rep. Randy Neugebauer. Stenholm is the ranking Democrat on the House Agriculture Committee.

The balance of power in the United States Congress has shifted, with the Republicans picking up at least two seats in the Senate and four seats in the House. That means the GOP now has a majority in both the House and the Senate.

The balance of power in Missouri has also shifted.  For the first time in eighty-four years, republicans have taken control of the legislative and executive branches of state government.  With the election of Matt Blunt as Governor, the GOP secured an additional seven seats in the House and three in the Senate. Those victories brought their majorities to 97-66 in the House and 23-11 in the Senate.

Cattle- Fax Market Update

Market HighlightsOnce again, a late week trade was noted. Prices on the fed side were $1 to $2 lower at mostly $85 live and $134 to $135 dressed. Trade volumes slowed as packers seemed less comfortable owning large inventories. Boxed beef prices slipped lower last week on moderate at best volumes. The announced opening of export markets to Japan did not impact the market, as most participants felt actual shipments would be later rather than sooner. Feeder cattle prices were mostly steady on the week on declining supplies. Calves traded in a wide range, mixed by weight and location. The bulk was steady, although there were instances of calves being quoted as much as $3 to $4 lower. Slaughter cows were mostly $1 higher. Corn prices were steady to lower; harvest is being rapidly completed through most of the country.                                                                             -To join Cattle-Fax, call (800) 825-7525
