  Watson Named Missouri Beef Ambassador

Shannon Watson was named the 2008 Missouri Beef Ambassador and will spend the year helping to spread the good word about the beef industry. Watson, along with six other contestants, vied for the title at the recent Missouri Cattle Industry Convention and Trade Show in Springfield, MO.
Watson is the seventeen-year-old daughter of Leon and Kim Watson of Blairstown, where she is the second oldest of four children. As a junior at Clinton High School, Watson is an active member of the FFA, serving as the Chapter Vice President and Area Sentinel. Watson also participates heavily in 4-H and took first place in the state 4-H Advanced Public Speaking Contest in 2006. Through various other youth activities, she has excelled in numerous speech contests and this past summer was selected to attend the Missouri Scholars Academy. Additionally, she is a member and past officer of the Missouri Junior Shorthorn Association and is a member of the United Methodist Church of Clinton.
Watson received a $250 cash prize and an expense paid trip to the national contest next fall in Oklahoma City, OK. Meredith Jones of Dawn placed second in the contest and Merle Ann Jaster of Concordia placed third. They received a cash prize of $150 and $50, respectively, for their placing.
The Beef Ambassador is chosen based on the participant's prepared speech, response to questions and a personal interview. The interviewees were asked questions about themselves and their plans for the future, as well as questions to test their knowledge of the beef industry. The speeches could cover any aspect of the beef industry.
The Missouri Beef Ambassador Contest is the qualifying contest for the National Beef Ambassador Contest and is a project of the American National CattleWomen made possible by the beef checkoff.
